Animals is when the human double-standards really shine, where the confusion about their own moral standards really stand out. In many countries around the world is acceptable (and even encouraged) to eat pigs, cows, chickens and other animal species; but in many of those places if you eat a cat or a dog you are a 'sick motherf*****' and they may even try to report you with an humane association. This logical flaw is common even among skeptics and it is based on the cultural assumption that the cats and dogs have more value because they are more friendly and/or aesthetically pleasing than other animals... well, and the fact that those are more easily domesticated than other animals and their sizes make them suitable for maintenance.
And the strength of this moral standard always amazes me; for example: is pretty common to see stray dogs wandering around even in the most poor places of the country i live in; but not even the most poor people kills dogs to eat them; and some of the poorest people explore trash cans just to find some food from the leftovers of somebody else; and in my country people do not tend to separate the types of garbage... so you can imagine how disgusting that must be. But if you put a pig (even if it is a skinny pig) on the streets of a poor town it will become human food in no time.
Something that helps this illogical moral standard is the existence of butchers; you don't have to kill the cow and cut its bloody muscles to eat them; somebody else does that for you, and he even cleans the blood and split it in so many pieces that it doesn't even resemble the animal where it came from.
So what is my position? Well, i am a carnivore; and i have no more sympathy for dogs than for cows. Honestly, I like cats... but they deserve to be killed and eaten just as much as cows and chickens. You may say that this conclusion of mine it gets to and extreme degree, because i am not even sure if insects just for being little and ugly deserve it more or less than bigger and prettier animals.
